Secular Humanist Society of New York
Humanism is the philosophy of life guided by reason and
science, freed from religious and secular dogmas, motivated by an
appreciation of life and the lives of others, seeking to reach goals
of human happiness, freedom and understanding on this earth, in this
life.
SHSNY is a member of the Council for Secular Humanism and of the
Alliance of Secular Humanist Societies.

Brunch Get-Together
Sunday, June 29, 12:30pm
We'll gather again at Fusia Asian Cuisine, 677C Lexington Avenue (on
56th Street just east of Lex) for SHSNY Sunday Brunch – to which
everyone interested in getting together with like-minded humanists and
rationalists for good food, lively talk and humanist camaraderie is
welcome.
Fusia is midtown-located, inexpensive and good pan-Asian. Order off
the menu; individual checks. For menu and prices, go to

There's no room-rental charge at the Stone Creek Lounge, but bar
management expects us each to spend the equivalent of a "one drink
minimum." A few bucks in the SHSNY kitty would be nice (but not
obligatory), too. Check out the food menu and prices (lots of
inexpensive "bar platter" choices) at

"The question What is consciousness? provokes all kinds of responses,
ranging from jokes about psychedelic drugs to brow-furrowing discourses on
life's meaning. Nearly everyone has an opinion, despite the lack of
meaningful data explaining the phenomenon. Susan Blackmore posed this
question to 21 leading scientists and philosophers who study consciousness
for a living, compiling their responses into lively, though slightly
repetitive, Q&A interviews.
"The heart of the science of consciousness is trying to understand the
first-person perspective – to explain subjective experiences
objectively." &mdash from the Scientific American review.

Cirincione begins with the first atomic discoveries of the 1930s and
covers the history of their growth all the way to the current crisis
with Iran. He unravels the science, strategy, and politics that have
fueled the development of nuclear stockpiles and increased the chance
of a nuclear terrorist attach. He explains why many nations choose
not to pursue nuclear weapons, and outlines a solution to the world's
proliferation problem.
The author is a major authority on this subject, perhaps one of the
most important public issues in 21st century history.
Our discussion will be led by Book Club Editor Elaine Lynn.
